medium;\">Ensuring that new employees have a successful onboarding experience is critical as it relates to both their initial integration and ongoing satisfaction.\u00a0 How major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/corporation.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporations<\/a> structure the HRSS employee onboarding process, and the initial training that takes place for new hires, can vary significantly between companies depending on a wide variety of factors, including organizational structure, industry, company culture, and geographic design.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Company Experience<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A recent Peeriosity Peercast<sup>TM<\/sup> featured a large healthcare company with over 80,000 employees, during which they shared their experiences in the HRSS employee onboarding area.\u00a0 Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peeriosity.com\/shared-services\/articles\/category\/hr_shared_services\/\">HR Shared Services organization<\/a> includes Benefits, Compensation, HR Administration, and Employee Relations, as well as an employee contact center and process optimization organization.\u00a0 A real emphasis has been placed on employee onboarding at this company and they consider a successful onboarding experience as the first step in a multi-phased approach to long-term career path\/planning within the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At our feature company, all new HRSS employees attend a 5-day (8 hours per day) new hire orientation in a classroom setting, followed by two weeks of on-the-job training.\u00a0 Some of the key attributes of this session include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Interactive segments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Ice breakers, trivia to start the day<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Participant\u2019s guide with supplemental PowerPoint<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Online course for hands-on application<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">On-the-job observations, as time is scheduled or permitted<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Quizzes to assess learning retention<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The onboarding is divided into four main segments, which are (1) HR Onboarding, which includes the collection of new hire paperwork and a benefits review, and (2) Corporate Onboarding, which is a full day session covering a company overview, mission, history, and other internal programs and core processes, (3) HRSS Orientation, which provides an overview of HRSS, how each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peeriosity.com\/shared-services\/articles\/2018\/12\/effectively-defining-the-scope-of-hr-shared-services\/\">department interacts<\/a>, and guidance on resources and processes, and (4) Functional Training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Developing an effective onboarding course curriculum, and then keeping it well maintained, is a common challenge for companies in general, and our feature company has developed a curriculum cycle to address this issue.\u00a0 It is structured as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Content Developed or Revised in Partnership w\/ SME<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Initial Draft Submitted to SMS for Review; Revisions Made and Reviewed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Approved Revised Content Sent to QA for Review; Revisions Made and Reviewed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Final Draft Sent to Leadership for Review and Sign-Off; Revisions Made and Reviewed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Final Draft Converted for Pilot or v.1 for Immediate Use<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Revisit Content for Updates<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">An important part of keeping their curriculum up to date is the use of a series of three attendee surveys administered at the end of the onboarding, two weeks later after new hire training, and at the end of the new hire transition period.\u00a0 These surveys are developed and administered using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/welcome\/sem\/?program=7013A000000mweBQAQ&amp;utm_bu=CR&amp;utm_campaign=71700000059186490&amp;utm_adgroup=58700005408390198&amp;utm_content=43700049188951718&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_source=adwords&amp;utm_term=p49188951718&amp;utm_kxconfid=s4bvpi0ju&amp;language=&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw39uYBhCLARIsAD_SzMTWGuZfSc_BIyGp1WvfslgoKpa01VVFw_I7arwueUErTmlH1ktdQ1UaAnKrEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Survey Monkey<\/a> and the results are closely reviewed by those overseeing the new hire orientation process, as well as by HRSS senior leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While the company is pleased with the results of its efforts in the HRSS employee onboarding area, they are also continuing to plan further enhancements in this area.\u00a0 Some future areas of focus include gamification (the application of game-design elements and game principles in non-game contexts), enhanced analytics, advanced learning platforms (mobile, etc.), and the use of learner groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Closing Summary<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The importance of effective new employee onboarding in both ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peeriosity.com\/shared-services\/articles\/2021\/09\/improving-customer-satisfaction-in-accounts-payable\/\">employee satisfaction<\/a> and long-term retention can\u2019t be disputed since it, along with the initial on-the-job training, set the stage for an employee\u2019s career at the company.\u00a0 With the proper resources and focus, this can become an area of strength for any HR Shared Services operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What is the status at your HR Shared Services organization of your new employee onboarding
