Services implementation is the challenge of maintaining momentum after transferred work processes become stable and routine.\u00a0 \u00a0While this is true for sponsors and customers, there is no group more critical to consider than the employees who work in Shared Services.\u00a0 Creating enthusiasm, excitement, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peeriosity.com\/shared-services\/articles\/2016\/11\/generating-enthusiasm-and-driving-change-in-a-mature-shared-services-operation\/\">motivation in a mature organization<\/a> is a very different challenge than designing a process or implementing a technology solution.\u00a0 Creating a highly motivated workforce is a challenge that must be successfully addressed to ensure the long-term health of Shared Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A recent Peercast<sup>TM<\/sup> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peeriosity.com\/shared-services\/articles\/category\/shared-services-leadership\/\">Peeriosity\u2019s Shared Services Leadership research area<\/a> featured a large agricultural company with global operations that is in the early years of setting up regional Shared Services, discussing their approach to getting out in front of the issues of employee motivation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peeriosity.com\/shared-services\/articles\/2021\/04\/leading-and-developing-your-remote-workforce\/\">employee development<\/a>.\u00a0 While the company operates regional centers in North America (Midwest), South America (Brazil), Europe (Poland), and Asia (China), the discussion focused on approaches used at their North American center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To address the challenge, our feature company emphasized the importance of communication and taking a transparent approach to keeping employees informed, using techniques like all-hands meetings, monthly newsletters, and traditional communication approaches like team meetings and email messages.\u00a0 They also implemented a multi-faceted recognition program that included employee recognition, peer recognition, leadership recognition, and customer recognition.\u00a0 Techniques discussed include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Employee of the Month<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Quarterly Most Valuable Player<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Employee of the Year<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Shared Services Bucks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Prizes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A Shared Services Awards Ceremony<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Feedback Surveys<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Recognition in Team Meetings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Cited as a key success factor was the need to pay close attention to celebrating successes along the way with team celebrations and holiday parties.\u00a0 This process is formal and participative, with social committee planning activities, including ice cream socials, scavenger hunts, picnics, and a \u201cwelcome wagon\u201d for new employees.\u00a0 In addition, Shared Services pays attention to the importance of being good citizens of the community with monthly fundraiser activities for charity and encouraging employees to participate in food drives and actively volunteer in the community.\u00a0 The Shared Services organization supports these efforts by providing a paid half-day off each quarter for volunteers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Here is a summary of some of the lessons learned:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Candid and honest communication is important.\u00a0 In fact, it is better to err on the side of sharing information openly, even if it might touch on a sensitive issue, rather than withholding information.\u00a0 In other words, it is easier to develop trust and be perceived as being open and honest when you actually are!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Getting regular feedback from employees and teams and allowing them to participate as important contributors to key decisions is very important to achieving a high level of morale.\u00a0 Listen to questions and concerns, ask for their ideas, and include as much input as possible so that employees feel like they are heard, and that they are part of creating a solution to any problem or issue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Ideas need to come from employees and teams.\u00a0 The best ideas are typically bottoms-up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Employees need to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/corporate-ladder.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsibility for their own career, performance<\/a>, attitude, and success. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">No matter what you do, you can\u2019t make everyone happy 100% of the time!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:
